Contemporary societal challenges—whether in healthcare, sustainability or development—are often described as “wicked problems”. These are complex, multi-layered issues rooted in political, organisational and social dynamics. Solving them requires more than just disciplinary expertise.
The Diploma in Transdisciplinary Research & Practice (TDRP) brings together knowledge from multiple disciplines and frames of reference, actively involving communities and stakeholders in shaping the research process. This integrated, participatory approach supports the co-creation of practical and scientific knowledge—making it a powerful tool for addressing persistent societal problems.
This programme is offered in collaboration between the Athena Institute, Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam and Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health (BALM). Certification is jointly award by Athena Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Madras School of Social Work, Chennai

Learner Reflections
“The transdisciplinary approach helped me see that non-traditional ways of doing research are valid. It shifted my thinking—it made me realise, ‘this is also okay.’”
“I struggled at first to place myself—was I more research or practice? TDR helped me see I could be both.”
“The course gave us tools to blend research and implementation in ways that centre people with lived experience—not just academics or policy experts. The in-person sessions, group activities, and reading circles were all deeply engaging. And learning from peers who were tackling their own persistent problems was a valuable learning and growth experience.”
