How Thiruselvi Steered a Silent Revolution
Thiruselvi (SFL Fellow)
Thiruselvi, 49, is a psychology graduate and caregiver with The Banyan’s aftercare programme in western Tamil Nadu. Drawing on her academic training and lived experiences, she has supported more than 100 clients in rebuilding their lives after institutional care.
Her work leading peer support groups, facilitating reintegration into communities, and helping clients access vital identity documents like Aadhaar, PAN, and ration cards, restores not just services, but dignity and citizenship. Her on-call follow-ups and medical counselling ensure continuity of care and reduce hospital readmissions.
Balancing her career with parenting her son, now a design engineer, Thiruselvi has become a role model in her field. Her future goals include expanding peer networks, enhancing life skills training, and building stronger employer connections for vocational inclusion.
From rural clinics to urban peer circles, her work is a testament to holistic mental healthcare—anchored in compassion, advocacy, and a deep belief in each person’s right to thrive.
