Kamala’s Journey of Transforming Herself and Her Community

Kamala (NALAM Mobiliser)
Kamala’s journey began in a difficult marriage aged 16. She spent the first decade as a housewife, with little space for herself. Eventually, she found purpose in community work—first through a government project for disability support and then with The Banyan in 2013.

At The Banyan, Kamala discovered the world of mental health. What started as a new challenge turned into a personal transformation. She not only built her identity as a community mental health worker but also helped countless others do the same.

Through her work with the ST community, she’s helped secure ration cards, pensions, education, and land—including patta for 59 individuals. One case still close to her heart is Ganasegar’s family, where she helped two daughters complete their education and rebuild their lives after their father’s death.

The Diploma in Social Mental Health sharpened her skills in empathy, ethics and clinical care—making her a powerful advocate for inclusive, grounded mental health support.
